Tips and Training for Webmasters Who Want More Free Search Engine Traffic

How To Increase Search Engine Ranking

We have just published an great article on why being on Page 1 of Google’s search results is every website owner’s dream. To be in position one of page 1 just increases the chance of your site being clicked by the user. So, how do you increase search engine ranking in Google and other major search engines like Bing and Yahoo? Do you increase your search engine rankings by black hat tactics? What would you do to get to page 1, position 1 of organic search results?

Many years ago, a lot of SEO marketers offered different tactics (time tested they claimed) on how to land your site onto page 1 and in the top 10 positions. They marketed website ranking tools, link farms and other automated software programs to get you into the top 3 positions. And then came the algorithm updates, In a blink of an eye, your website completely dispappeared! How was this possible? And where were the SEO marketers who promised you that their methods were in fact, approved by search engines? Well, they ended up with eggs on their faces, didn’t they?

If you want to increase search engine ranking and get to position 1, then you have to keep an eye on the ball. Be focused on your goal: that of delivering great content to users that they actually enjoy reading because they’re informative and accurate. If you have a site that’s dedicated to product reviews, then do your job and review products. Don’t farm it out to an outsourcer in a far flung area who have not even read one (book), used one (tangible product), let alone, see one! Those reviews can sound spammy because they will be generalized and vague. If it’s something that you haven’t used yourself but know someone or have read a great review from an expert, then incorporate their expert opinions and credit them for quotes you used.

User are more sophisticated yet simple in their querries nowadays. Instead of tailoring their querries to what they think a computer thinks, now with the advent of more intelligent and targeted algorithms, entire phrases and questions can now be asked. If before we used to search “temperature in New York” now we can actually search “temeperature in New York in November” and the search results will give you tens of weather related information and sites about New York in November. There will be related searches that you may even want to consider: why New York is expensive in November (the marathon!), what to do in New York in November, what to wear in New York in November and what to eat in New York in November. All these are great opportunities for your website to make it to that page 1, position 1.

You can start to increase search engine ranking for your site if you remain focused on giving your users a great quality experience when they’re on your site. Let your site be engaging. Lead them to try out new things. Studies show that Page 1 gets most of the clicks. And if your site is in positions 1-3, then you’re in a very good place indeed!

Increase Search Engine Ranking the Proper Way

You build your blog and it’s now live online. What you have to do now is focus on things that will make your site more visible. You have to make sure your site is found by people searching for information you offer on your site. If you know how to increase search engine ranking across all platforms, then you have a better chance of reaching more people and boosting your chances of making money online. The one thing that you should not do is leave your new website without knowing and analyzing metrics and how it’s doing on a daily or weekly basis. Being complacent is not the way to go if you want to make serious money online. So how do other webmasters increase search engine ranking for their sites? By knowing what all the numbers and data Google analytics give you for free!

Here is how it works. Google has done a lot of tweaking in its algorithm to weed out websites that do not give good, quality information to visitors. Their new algorithms have also pinpointed websites that have shallow content or those that are of no value to visitors. They also were able to pinpoint websites with duplicate content and whose main purpose is to lure visitors onto their sites but not giving them good experience. So the object is not to “game” the search engines, but instead focus on the quality of information by making sure the articles are original, verifiable and from a well trusted source. If you want to increase search engine ranking, then ensure that your website follows these simple rules:

Rule #1: Increase search engine ranking by focusing on quality articles. A lot of pages have already been written about how poorly written articles, poorly edited and sloppy articles can sink a website. If you’re using articles that have been scraped or articles that already exist on another website, even if you own the website, will not help your site to rank. The quality of articles will show to Google and other search engines if enough care was given to building your site and focusing on the user experience. For websites that dropped from search engine results and ones that couldn’t increase their traffic because they show poorly on search engine results, then it’s time to go back and rate the quality of your site. If you don’t trust information on your site, how do you expect others to?

Rule #2: Increase search engine ranking and your website’s traffic by looking at your entire website as a whole, rather than as individual pages. Search engines focus on the quality of a website in total rather than as pieces of a puzzle. If your homepage has excellent information but drops the ball when it comes to internal pages, then don’t be surprised if overall, your site will not fare well in search engine results. Total user experience means that all pages will be evaluated based on the algorithms search engines use. This just proves a point that the home page does not make a website. Internal pages should have the same authoritative information as your home page.

Rule #3: Increase search engine ranking and website traffic by making use of rich snippets! Give your users a preview of what is in store for them when they visit your site. This is like active advertising using words to get them to click your link. If you use boring and run-of-the mill descriptions for what you offer on your site, then be prepared to have your site ignored. Use rich snippets to promote and emphasize what your site is all about. Give users a call to action so that they get a sense of urgency and know that there’s something worth reading when they get to your site.

Rule #4: Increase search engine ranking by knowing how to use Google analytics and knowing what the metrics mean. Look at page impressions and your CTR. See which keywords you rank for and how well you’re ranking. Impressions and clickthrough rates are just part of the story. To increase search engine traffic, you also have to know where your queries or searches are coming from. If they’re coming from countries abroad, ask yourself if there are certain things you can do to improve your global audience. Can you include articles that are specific to their location? Perhaps local links that will give your website local flavor and will entice them to read more or click more of your internal pages. Put yourself in their shoes. When queries are made, what is your visitor’s objective? Is it to buy something, look for more information or join a group? The best way to help your visitor is to make sure the tools she needs are front and center on the page. If you want them to join a group, then make sure the join link is easy to find. If you’re giving them more information on a product, then use images to highlight your products.

Making sure that your website is shown on the search results is just one part of a whole set. From ensuring that your snippets are compelling and accurate to making your visitors want to stay longer is what you have to look at. The metrics that you use, whether it’s Google analytics or another software that you’re more comfortable with should give you accurate information that you can filter. Knowing how your site performed a week ago to three months ago will help you target better and achieve the results you want.

After the Penguin and Panda updates, a lot of webmaster complained that their sites fell off first page results. Google answered that this means that changes to the site’s content and linking are needed as some sites were deemed to be not following Google’s Terms of Service. If this is not the case for your site, then what made your site fall off the first pages is possibly that your keywords do not match what your pages are all about. Go back to your content. Tweak and improve them. Add helpful videos and links that give more in-depth information to your visitors. In fact, help them out. If they can’t find information from your site but use your site as a jumping point, then they’ll know where to go when they need the information again. A good user experience should be your goal and you’ll see an increased search engine ranking when satisfied users come back to your site over and over again.
